Osaby Säteri - (Osaby manor)


SVENSKA NATURSKYDDSFÖRENINGEN (SWEDISH SOCIETY FOR NATURE CONSERVATION),
is owner of the farm, Osaby, in the south-eastern part of Sweden, outside the town of Växjö in Småland. The business of this farm consists out dairy farming combine with forestry. The agricultural business is all certified organic, while the forestry is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The very purpose of the management of Osaby farm is to care for, preserve and create environments in order to enable plant- and animal species to survive in vigorous stocks under favourable circumstances.
In 1994 more than half of the total area of the farm and most of the lake area, totalling 351,5 hectares, were designated as nature protection area.
The farm consists of:
   Productive forest:   374.7 hectares
   Bog:   22,8 hecares
   Arable land:   81.5 hectares
   Building site and others:   9,2 hectares
   Small lakes inside land:   5,3 hectares
   part of the Vendel lake:   126.5 hectares
The location of Osaby and the very exclusive biotopes that are preserved there (meadow, pasturelands, together with marshland, ponds and ditches) make it perfectly suitable as habitat for different plant- and animal species.

The nature reserves landarea of 225 ha includes all cultivated land and about 100 ha of forests at the Swedish Society for Nature Conservations largest property in the country. The reserve have many visitors and many paths have been restored. The farming at Osaby manor is ecological and it is connected to KRAV. At the farm there is cattle that keeps the landscape open, and helps to keep up the great variety of vegetation that is the result of thousands of years of grazing.
